Louisiana, Show It NOW! Feb. 23 Deadline! Exercise your democratic duty! DO WHAT'S RIGHT! Stand up for your Rights! DO IT RIGHT! Get Your Opinion on the Record! DO IT NOW! Your opinion is important in the question of whether Shintech will be allowed to build a massive PVC plastics and chemical factory on the Mississippi River at Convent, LA. Nearly 500 citizens came to recent hearings in Convent and spoke out for 16 hours at least 95% against Shintech. The state Dept. of "Environmental Quality" was forced to hold the hearings, after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rejected DEQ's air permit for Shintech, due to 50 technical errors. DEQ has shown blatant bias toward Shintech, a Japan-based corporation, and is expected to grant Shintech a new air permit. But the EPA will be watching. The federal agency has instructed DEQ to consider environmental justice issues in its decision. Meanwhile, EPA itself is dealing with a Civil Rights complaint filed by citizens in the mostly low-income, African-American community, which overwhelmingly opposes Shintech. Shintech's water permit was recently upheld under unusual circumstances by a judge. Now, the company has an OK to dump eight million gallons of contaminated wastewater per day into the Mississippi River, the main drinking water source for most people downstream. We cannot depend on our state courts, the legislature, or the executive branch of government to save us from Shintech's poisons. Most of our elected representatives are being swayed by the big money dangled and tossed around by those pursuing "economic development" projects not in the public interest. We MUST rise as citizens to demand changes that will improve our air, water, land, and quality of life. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO STOP SHINTECH! WE CAN DO IT! DON'T LET THEM SACRIFICE CONVENT AND THE RIVER ROAD! SAVE OUR LOUISIANA CULTURAL HERITAGE! "DETOX" LOUISIANA! SAVE YOUR OWN RIGHT TO LIFE, AND THE FUTURE, FOR THE CHILDREN! BEFORE THE FEB. 23 DEADLINE, Send your opinion on Shintech and any stories that you have about pollution, health problems, history along the River Road, and the inadequacy of DEQ to these addresses.
